Travel Insurance
Yo can add travel insurance (also called trip insurance) as an option to any of the three base health insurance plans.
Travel insurance covers you whether travelling out of Canada or out of province. Many Canadians don’t realize that travelling out of province may also incur additional costs not covered by your provincial health insurance plan.
The travel insurance policy covers you for:
- Travel outside of Canada. Up to $2,000,000 of emergency medical coverage. Choose from trip lengths of 15 days, 30 days, or 48 days. (for trip lengths longer than 48 days, ask us about extended travel insurance). Available for those under age 80.
- Travel in Canada, up to 180 days per trip, all age groups.
Elegible expenses include:
- Hospital accomodations, hospital services and supplies necessary for the emergency care during hospitalization.
- Emergency medical services, treatment by a physician or surgeon.
- Diagnostic services such as X-Rays and other diagnostic tests. Some diagnostic tests may need pre-authorization by GMS.
- Prescription drugs obtained on the prescription of the attending physician to a maximum of a 30 day prescription.
- Private duty nursing, to a maximum of $5000 per person for the professional services of a registered nurse while hospitalized during an acute emergency illness or injury.
- Emergency road ambulance.
- Air ambulance (excluding helicopter transport) - or regulary scheduled airline to transport you back to your province of residence for further in-hospital treatment. Requires prior approval by GMS.
- Special attendent - one return trip economy airfare for medical attendant to accompany you back to your province of residence. Some conditions apply (excludes travel companions) and requires prior approval by GMS.
- Paramedical services - to a maximum of $300 perperson for emergency services of an osteopath, physiotherapist, chiropractor, chiropodist or podiatrist.
- Accidental Dental - repair or replacement of teeth by an accidental blow to the mouth to a maximum of $2000 per person. Excludes dental implants.
- Return of remains - when death results for a covered emergency, expenses for preparation or return of the deceased to their province of residence, to a maximum of $3000 per person.
- Other coverages include Family to bedside, family transportation, return of vehicle, return of cat or dog, child care, escort of accompanying child or dependent, out of pocket expenses, and 24 hour travel assistance services. Full details are available in the policy wording.

Benefits are subject to a 30 day waiting period. If you are converting from another GMS plan or from a plan with comparable benefits at another insurance company then this waiting period may be waived. Please read the policy wording for full details.
